The Pill is prescribed to you, so you need to visit your doctor or Family Planning Association to find out which type will be most suited to you. The progesterone only pill is made of the hormone progesterone. It works mainly by thickening mucus in the cervix.

What are the chances of getting pregnant when using the progesterone only pill?

1-4%, depending on how carefully you follow the instructions. For example, if you do not take the pill consistently every day it will not work as well. With this pill, you have to take it at the same time every day (within 3 hours)

There are no serious health risks associated with taking this pill.

Advantages

• Can be used at any age.
• Can be used by women who are breast-feeding.
• Useful for women who can’t take the combined pill.

Disadvantages

• Must be prescribed by a doctor
• Must remember to take it daily within 3 hours of your usual time of taking it!!
• May cause irregular bleeding or no periods.
