If you’re not ready to work or haven’t found a course to study, then travel may be an alternative for you.
Exploring exotic locations, experiencing new cultures, trying new foods and meeting people can give you life skills and a world education that you won’t find in any book. Travel is a great way to explore the big, wide world and you won’t regret it! There are many ways to travel: maybe you’re just after a holiday or want to study abroad, or maybe you want to try living in another country –whatever you choose its worth putting in some preparation before you go so that you can make the most of your travel.
1. Location: Take some time to research where you want to go – what’s the climate, the currency, when is the most popular time of year to travel there, customs, language/s, do’s and don’ts, transport, festivals and more…
2. $$: you can travel on a budget but its worth saving as much as you can before you leave so you can enjoy your time away AND make it home again!
3. Contacts: some of you may be lucky enough to have a family member or friend living in the country you wish to travel to. Make contact with them - even the most distant relative might offer you a sofa to sleep on for a night.
4.The 2 V’s - Visas and Vaccinations. Check out whether there are any entry requirements for the country you are going to, depending on what you want to do in that country i.e. holiday/work/study/volunteer may mean you need different visas. AND depending on the country you are visiting you may need to get a few shots before you go. For example for countries in South East Asia it is recommended that you get vaccinations against things like Hepatitis and Typhoid. The best way to check is to visit your doctor or local travel doctor.
5. Insurance: Your passport is your second most valuable commodity (after yourself of course). Safeguard yourself against theft, cancellations and accidents while on your trip. It may cost a little extra but it’s worth the peace of mind. Most travel agents will offer travel insurance packs, likewise your bank or existing insurance provider.
6. Booking a flight: shop around! Different travel shops offer different deals so go in and talk to them – most travel agents have traveled themselves and can give you advice based on their own experiences. They may also know of upcoming sales or travel expos which might help you get a cheaper ticket.
And now you’re ready to go! Its time for the farewell party and to pack (and re- pack) your bag.
