Nationality, culture, ethnicity and identity. Find out what these words really mean...Nationality is a term used to describe the sense of belonging or being connected that people often share with a country. This can give people a feeling of ownership and loyalty that is determined by sharing a common language and character, and not necessarily by political beliefs or divisions.
The term ‘culture’ refers to learned and shared values, beliefs and attitudes that shape the way we see things and often the way we behave. ‘Culture’ is a pretty broad term and includes technology, arts and sciences, but also moral systems, behaviour and habits.
To belong to an ‘ethnic group’ or be of a certain ‘ethnicity’, often refers to a group of people who identify with each other either because of common ancestry or genealogy, or by common cultural, linguistic, religious or territorial traits.
‘Identity’ is a term you would use when talking about yourself or someone else’s understanding of themselves. Our identity is what makes us unique and distinct from other people, and shapes how we perceive ourselves and how we are perceived by other people.
